The 2020 Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday night with an introduction by a former “Desperate Housewives” star and a pre-recorded rendition of the National Anthem.
“The past four years have left us as a nation diminished and divided,” said Eva Longoria, one of four actresses who will emcee the mostly-virtual event, each on their own night.
“America is better than this,” she declared.
Up next, was a video montage of a group of activists and politicians, including Joe Biden, reciting the preamble to the Constitution.
Then, Biden’s grandkids recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
The DNC continued to lean into this year’s virtual aspect of the convention, with a choir of young singers from all 50 states in alternating red, white and blue shirts singing The Star Spangled Banner in a video complete with special effects.
While some watchers said the rendition brought tears to their eyes, others mocked the saccharine display.
“Sure, kids across America singing the National Anthem is adorable, but what if they were signing Fight Song instead?,” quipped one pollster.
