Rep. Doug Collins to lead Trump campaign’s Georgia recount effort

Georgia Rep. Doug Collins — who just lost his bid for a Senate seat — will lead the Trump campaign’s recount effort in the state that was too close to call.

The move was announced Sunday night and the recount in The Peach State will begin when “the canvassing has concluded,” according to President Trump’s campaign.

“Republicans stand by the ideal that every eligible voter should be able to vote legally and have it be counted,” Collins said in a statement.

Collins and the Trump campaign both claimed, without providing evidence, that ballots were “improperly harvested” in Georgia.

“During the coming recount, we are confident we will find evidence of improperly harvested ballots and other irregularities that will prove that President Trump won Georgia fairly again on his way to re-election as President,” Collins said.

With 99 percent reporting, Trump was trailing President-elect Joe Biden by about 10,000 votes in Georgia.

The recount cannot alter the outcome of the election as Biden on Saturday surpassed the 270 electoral votes needed to secure the presidency with a victory in Pennsylvania.
