Is this the worst car park in Britain? NHS hospital staff face being blocked in on all sides if they leave their motors at privately-owned ‘wasteland’

A parking area ‘full of potholes’ and lacking any marked bays may just be one of Britain’s worst car parks.

Sitting directly opposite the eye hospital at Hull Royal Infirmary, the privately-owned Fountain Street car park has left visitors stuck for up to ’40 minutes’.

Locals have now slammed the spot after a photo showing the ‘chaos’ was shared to the Hull Live Traffic & Travel Facebook page.

The image shows roughly 50 cars parked back-to-back with no marked bays and people blocked in from all sides.

The car park is owned by Bank Park which charges £4 for the minimum stay. They argue that it is not possible to have marked bays because of the stony surface, with sleepers marking the rows instead.

Commenting on the post, many vented their frustration, including staff and visitors to the hospital.

One person said: ‘This is what my wife found after a 10 hour shift today. She had to climb in through the passenger side.’

Another said: ‘I had to wait 40 mins until the numpties came back to their car after finishing my shift!’

Someone else commented: ‘It’s a shockingly bad car park. No structure, lack of defined bays, Dead ends. It’s basically a wasteland free for all in places.

‘But you pay a premium to use it! Imagine rushing to see a sick relative, stressed, worried, You can’t find a space. It’s disgusting it’s allowed to be kept in this state.’

A fourth person added: ‘I’m 25 weeks pregnant when at hospital appointments I have to arrive an hour early to find a spot, it’s got to a point where people where just dumping there cars today. It’s ridiculous.’

Another commented: ‘Disgusting car park, pot holes and dangerous seeing as how people with poor eyesight use this park to attend the eye hospital.’

A spokesperson for Bank Park told Hull Live the company had given a refund for both parking and taxi fare to a customer who complained yesterday. The spokesperson said: ‘The car park is not a patrolled site, it is operated by ANPR cameras.

‘The surface of the car park is planning which is loose stone, therefore white lines cannot be drawn on the floor, the rows are marked with sleepers.

‘Unfortunately, in every car park you will get people not adhering to the terms and conditions and parking outside of marked bays or inconsiderately parking.

‘Legally we are not allowed clamp or move a vehicle.’
