Your Ultimate Guide to the Wicked Movies

One of Broadway’s most beloved musicals is finally getting the Hollywood treatment.

Universal is set to adapt Wicked, the Tony Award–winning Stephen Schwartz musical based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which offers a new perspective on the universe of The Wizard of Oz through the eyes of the Wicked Witch. The show first debuted on Broadway to critical acclaim back in 2003.

Jon M. Chu (who directed the adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights) will helm the highly anticipated project—and he’s already found his Elphaba and Glinda in Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

Ahead, everything you need to know about the Wicked film adaptation.

The musical will be split into two separate films, set to arrive in theaters in 2024 and 2025.

In April 2022, Chu announced that the Wicked adaptation will be split into two separate movies, the first of which will premiere in December 2024 and the second to be released the following year.

“As we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it,” Chu wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. “As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but TWO!!!”

He added that he, the cast, and the crew are all committed to creating “nothing less than an experience that honors its foundations for all the fans who’ve waited for this movie, and to offer a thrilling, fantastical world full of dynamic characters that invites in those who are unfamiliar.”
