The Handmaid’s Tale is the hit series on Hulu based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood. The show is back tomorrow, April 28, for its fourth season after a two-year gap due to the coronavirus pandemic. Fans are excited to return to the show, but where was the series filmed?

Where is The Handmaid’s Tale set?

The series, which has been adapted to the screen from Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, is set in a grey and grim future.

The season four synopsis says: June (Elisabeth Moss) strikes back against Gilead as a fierce rebel leader, but the risks she takes bring unexpected and dangerous new challenges.”

The world of the series is bleak, telling a tale set in the near future.

A Christian fundamentalist theocratic regime now governs the former United States following a fertility crisis.

The series is specifically set in the Republic of Gilead close to The Wall which is located near Cambridge, Harvard.

The setting in the series comes directly from Atwood’s novels, with the show changing little about its location.

Cambridge in the United States is just outside of Boston in Massachusetts.

The series only briefly alludes to the location’s former names that viewers would be familiar with.

Where was The Handmaids Tale filmed?

Despite taking place in a region of a future United States, the series did not choose to film on location.

Instead, the filmmakers decided to film the majority of the series in Toronto, Canada.

Toronto has a long history of doubling up for American cities.

It is so common for Hollywood productions to be filmed in Toronto, that colloquially the city has been referred to as Hollywood North.

Many American films have used Toronto as a stand-in for their cities, with New York being the most common.

The series specifically shot in Toronto City Hall for most of its early seasons, the location later being destroyed in the show.

Elsewhere, the show was also filmed in Hamilton, Ontario for many of the show’s external scenes.

The Handmaid’s Tale was created by Bruce Miller, with Mike Barker directing the majority of the show’s episodes.

Miller is best known for also producing other series such as The 100, Alphas and A Town Called Eureka.

Barker has been in the director’s chair for several TV projects including Hit and Run, Fargo and Broadchurch.

The Handmaid’s Tale season four is available to watch on Hulu and Amazon Prime from April 28.
