The Last Kingdom: Netflix tease fourth season of show
The Last Kingdom season five was given the green light by Netflix back in 2020 and preparation for the new episodes is underway. The season four finale saw Sigtryggr (played by Eysteinn Sigurðarson) and Stiorra (Ruby Hartley) leave Winchester following the siege. Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) was tasked with raising Aethelstan (Caspar Griffiths) as a strong fighter and heir to the throne – will there be a time jump?
Will there be a time jump in The Last Kingdom season 5?
The Last Kingdom is a historical drama set during the Anglo-Saxon period, with the first season taking place between 866 and 878.
There was not much of a time jump at the start of the second season, which took place between 878 and 886.
Season three, which saw the death of King Alfred (David Dawson), was set between 893 and 900 so there was a jump of seven years in between.
The latest season, which was the fourth instalment, is believed to have been set in about 905 when Uhtred is in theory about 50 years old.
Uhtred actor Dreymon has already said his character will be about 54 at the start of season five, so there may be a small time jump.

The series is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell and the author had said he wanted to end the story in the year 937.
If Uhtred really is in his mid-50s by season five, it will most likely be set in about 910, with a five-year time jump from the fourth season.
Luckily for fans, this means there is still scope for a season six if the TV adaptation plans to conclude in the year 937.
Fans took to Reddit to discuss the season five timeline with one saying: “Like we predicted for the fourth season, we’re also expecting to see another time skip for the fifth season.
“We’re not expecting many of the characters to alter their appearances too much, but the largest change will be between King Edward’s sons Aethalsten and Aelfweard, who will require new actors to reflect their growth.”
Young actor Griffiths stood out as one of the recurring characters in the fourth season as Uhtred had to keep him safe from the Danes.
His grandmother Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth) had redeemed herself by allowing Aethelstan to be reunited with his mother Ecgwynn (Julia Brown).
After Aelswith was poisoned by Lord Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller), Uhtred took Aethelstan away to train him for his role as the next heir to the Wessex throne.
There has been no mention of a change in the cast just yet but there is still plenty of time to wait.
Fans are keen to find out what will happen in the fifth season and they hope Uhtred will make one last attempt to claim back his homeland.

He returned to Bebbanburg at the start of the fourth season but was not prepared to face the wrath of his cousin Wihtgar (Ossian Perret).
Uhtred and his friends ended up losing their beloved Father Beocca (Ian Hart) in the process after he sacrificed himself for Uhtred’s son Young Uhtred (Finn Elliot).
One fan said on Reddit: “Of course Uthred will attempt to retake Bebbenburg! Even when he does not stand a chance, he attempts to.”
They are also waiting to find out the fate of Lady Aelswith after she was poisoned and her life was left hanging in the balance.
If she manages to survive the poisoning, viewers believe Aethelhelm will find another way to take her out of the picture so his grandson Aelfweard can become king.
There is also the question of who Uhtred will end up with as his next romantic partner, as he said goodbye to Aethelflaed (Millie Brady).
In the books, Uhtred forms a relationship with season four newcomer Eadith (Stefanie Martini) and some fans believe they will look after Aethelstan together.
Others are rooting for Eadith to fall in love with Finan (Mark Rowley) following their undeniable chemistry in season four.
Fans have taken to Twitter to express their excitement ahead of the new season, with one saying: “Done watching season four The Last Kingdom it’s so EPIC!!! The war scenes were tremendous!!! Give me SEASON FIVE!!!! [sic].”
Cornwell said filming for season five was to start at the end of 2020 so there should be an update in the next few months.
