The Last Kingdom season five will be on Netflix in the near future, with filming having wrapped on the final season. The series finale is expected to include some dramatic twists as the ultimate fates of the characters are revealed. Fans are worried the Lady of Mercia, Aethelflaed (played by Millie Brady) will meet her demise following a worrying promotional image.
Will Aethelflaed die in The Last Kingdom?
The Last Kingdom season five is just around the corner and fans were heartbroken to hear it will be the final season.
The series is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell and it has continued to follow the plights of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon).
At the end of season four, Uhtred helped save the Saxon kingdom of Winchester from the clutches of the Danes.
King Edward (Timothy Innes) and his sister Aethelflaed negotiated with the Viking warlord Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) to come up with a deal.
Aethelflaed had been named Lady of Mercia following the death of her husband Aethelred (Toby Regbo).
Fans are keen to know what path she takes in season five, and a promotional photo has provided a possible clue.
The photo shows Aethelflaed looking much older, bearing a crown, with her hair pulled back in a more ‘mature’ style.
She is seen wearing a simple green cloak, lined with fur, and the photo includes a quote from the Lady of Mercia herself.
The season four quote says: “Dead or alive it does not matter. We cannot hand Winchester to the Danes for the life of one man.”
In the photo, Aethelflaed looks pale, forlorn, with an almost troubled expression as if she is deep in thought.
Fans have taken to Reddit to discuss what the photo could mean for the character, and they have raised concerns.
One said: “She looks like a real tragic queen on this one.” Meanwhile, another said: “She’s ill, I believe.”
Many viewers believe she will die in the final season, paving the way for Edward to claim Mercia.
Another fan said: “I think she’ll die from illness too, and Edward will take control of Mercia just like in real history.”
“Pretty sure she gets ill in the books too, so it wouldn’t surprise me. I haven’t read the books, I just… uh… know things…” another said.

The real-life Aethelflaed died at a young age, just seven years after the start of her rule as Lady of Mercia.
She is believed to have been born circa 870, meaning she would have been about 48 years old when she died.
In the books, Aethelflaed does indeed die of an illness, so this may be the case in the TV adaptation.
Fans have praised the show’s makeup department for making the young actress Brady look twice her real age.
Brady is 27 in real life, whereas her character is supposed to be in her 40s by season five.
Referring to her overall look, another fan said on Reddit: “She look sickly to anyone else?” [Sic]
To which someone responded: “Probably following the books. She dies of illness early (cancer I think).”
There is a possibility the series is following the story of the real-life Aethelflaed, who died young.
Fans had changed their opinions of Aethelflaed by the fourth season, as she chose to rule Mercia over her relationship with Uhtred.
She also put her own family at risk during the Winchester siege, and viewers could not help but feel betrayed.
The Last Kingdom is streaming on Netflix now.
