Riverdale's most explosive season 5 predictions as Netflix confirms January release date

RIVERDALE'S return to Netflix has been officially confirmed – and with it a host of explosive season 5 predictions.

The new series of the American teen drama will stream from January 21.

But what are fans expecting from the latest offering?

Executive producer and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has already confirmed there will be a time hop, but the question is of how many years?

One fan on Reddit suggested a leap of at least '4-5 years', while another commented: "That's the smartest choice tbh.

"The fact that these kids are in high school yet focusing on all these other insane mysteries and getting involved in murder and cults is getting more and more glaring."

Another avid fan listed their key possibilities and wrote: "Betty, Veronica, and Jughead will be reluctant to come back to Riverdale.

"Archie’s feelings on the matter depend on whether or not he ends up leaving the town."

They added: "Everyone comes back to Riverdale but a new mystery forces them all to stay."

It has been confirmed that Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Archie's (KJ Apa) relationship is not over and the pair will rekindle their romance in season 5.

But one viewer said: "Varchie will definitely be broken up. I really can’t see them doing long distance.

"Maybe Veronica meets someone new during the time jump but in season 5 her feelings for Archie come back after seeing him again."

While another suggested: "Can't you just see Betty returning to Riverdale with a fiance only to fall back in love with Jughead?"

On Archie's future, one said: "I think Archie is definitely staying in Riverdale.

"He's already refused to sign away the family construction company and he's running a gym.

"I think he's going to try to make one or both of those businesses work."

The concluding episode of season four, named Killing Mr. Honey, left many storylines unresolved.

The open-ended cliffhanger took the form of a murder mystery, with the video-tape killings remaining unsolved.

The CW series ended abruptly due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Aguirre-Sacasa told TV Line that the shake up will not kick in at the start of season 5, as they are keen to film the three episodes that weren't able to happen due to the pandemic.

He explained: "So, what we're doing is picking up right where we left off for the first three episodes, and then doing a time jump… after those three episodes.''

So could that mean that even this 'long shot prediction' from one fan could have a chance?

"Final scene of season 4 will be a zoom out to jughead in the admissions office with the dean finishing reading the riverdale story, encompassing all of seasons 1 through 4," suggested the fan.

Riverdale Season 5 is on Netflix from January 21.
