Peaky Blinders season 6: Will Aunt Polly actress Helen McCrory leave Peaky Blinders?

Peaky Blinders: Tommy and Polly feature in series five bonus clip

Peaky Blinders’ cast and crew were ready to commence with filming in March 2020 when the world went into lockdown and everything had to be postponed. But soon shooting will finally begin on the new episodes with an expected release date at the end of the year, or early 2022 if there are any more delays. After the gripping season five finale, it’s no wonder fans are eager to see what happens next.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Peaky Blinders.

Will Aunt Polly actress Helen McCrory leave Peaky Blinders?

Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) had enough of everyone at the end of series five of Peaky Blinders.

He had found out there were numerous rats among the gang, including his own cousin Michael Gray (Finn Cole).

During a meeting with the rest of the gang members, with support from American wife Gina Gray (Anya Taylor-Joy), Michael stood up and claimed how he would be better off as the leader of the Peaky Blinders.

He said this was now because he had connections to drug smugglers in America and so could expand their empire if he was in charge.

Of course, no one took him seriously and so Michael and Gina left The Garrison pub and the Peaky Blinders.

So Michael was ready to go at it alone with his new dodgy business venture but in the finale, mum Polly Shelby (Helen McCrory) decided to back him.

After her fiancé Aberama Gold (Aidan Gillen), Polly seemed to have grown even more resentful towards her nephew and so handed in her resignation to Tommy.

She then said to him in his office: “There will be a war and one of you will die but which one I cannot tell.”

This left fans fearing actress McCrory’s exit from Peaky Blinders in the upcoming sixth season.

Nevertheless, there is no need to worry as creator Steven Knight has already confirmed she won’t be leaving anytime soon.

During a Q&A at the British Film Institute, when questioned if Polly among some of the other popular characters would survive until the end, he simply replied: “Yes.”

However, McCrory did previously state how she had considered leaving Peaky Blinders.

The actress was almost ready to give up her iconic role before season five.

She thought about making the big change when Peaky Blinders switched from being shown on BBC Two to BBC One.

But McCrory told Express.co.uk among other media outlets she had made a decision to stay on the show, despite getting an offer to take on another role.

McCrory said: “I had a wonderful offer of another thing by one of the people I think is the most talented people.”

McCrory continued: “And I said no and came back to this because I feel it’s given me so much.

“You see it through to the end if somebody wants to, you don’t just go ‘thank you.’

“And also I want to see it through to the end.”

So how is Polly’s relationship with nephew Tommy going to change after leaving the Peaky Blinders to support son Michael?

Peaky Blinders is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
