Midsomer Murders has had a difficult couple of years with delays and setbacks. However, months after season 22 hit television screens, ITV is airing the latest instalment of the series. The one-off special will air on Sunday evening.

When is Midsomer Murders season 23 out?

The last couple of seasons of Midsomer Murders have had a sporadic release schedule.

The next episode of season 22 is set to air on Sunday, October 2 at 8pm on ITV, the third episode of the new season.

Season 22 premiered back in April of this year with the episode The Wolf Hunter of Little Worthy.

Before this, season 21 of the show aired on March 21, 2021 with the episode titled Strong of Death.

This came after a year-long break due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the previous two episodes airing at the start of 2020.

Due to the unfortunately inconsistent release schedules of seasons 21 and 22, there is little information on season 23.

ITV has not confirmed the follow-up season and there has been no word on when filming could commence.

Luckily, the show is now back on track after several delays, mainly due to the rigorous COVID protections put in place on the set.

Speaking about the filming of season 22, Executive Producer Michele Buck explained: “We are very pleased ITV has asked us to produce more Midsomer Murders.

“We will have our signature mix of tantalising mysteries, wonderful guest stars and stunning locations while also maintaining a safe working environment for all our cast and crew in these current challenging circumstances.”

The third episode of season 22 brings it to the halfway point, with a total of six episodes confirmed for the season.

Episode three, titled Happy Families, will see DCI John Barnaby (played by Neil Dudgeon) and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) return once more.

What is Happy Families about?

The next episode will see DCI Barnaby and DS Winter thrust into a murder mystery weekend, but it is more immersive than it first appears.

Forced to work alone, the pair have to bring all their skills to task in order to discover who the killer is, as they are stuck on the weekend away.

After the killer strikes for real, Barnaby and Winter soon realise the game is far more realistic than any of the guests had envisioned.

The victim is a local board game manufacturer, though there is little motive behind the crime.

Barnaby discovers poison is involved, leading to a tense atmosphere in the game-turned-nightmare.

This episode’s guest stars include Life’s Rachael Stirling and Wonder Woman 1984’s Stuart Milligan, playing Eleanor and Victor Karras.

The Karras couple are the owners of the board game manufacturing company and hosts of the murder mystery weekend.

As it turns out, the two have more enemies than they realise.

Midsomer Murders is available to watch on ITV and ITV Hub.
