Mariska Hargitay stars as the fan-favourite detective Olivia Benson on NBC’s hit crime drama, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Over the weekend, the actress penned a loving tribute to her husband, who fans may also recognise.

Mariska made her first appearance as Olivia Benson on Law and Order during the pilot episode which aired in 1999 and continues to do so, 22 years later.

During the weekend, the actress took to Instagram to share a loving tribute to her husband Peter Hermann.

She shared a series of photos, including a selfie of the two together and captioned it: “Grateful for this guy and this crazy beautiful day.”

Fans flooded her comments with love, including Sjmedra who wrote: “Oh I love this!! I really hope you and Peter know that you two are couple goals.”

Mariska’s husband Peter is also a fellow actor and the two first met on the set of Law and Order back in 2001 when he guest-starred on the spin-off as Attorney Trevor Langan.

He played a defence attorney who often crossed paths with the SVU officers and recently reprised his role in October for the special 500th episode celebration.

In total, Peter has appeared in 33 episodes of the show, alongside his wife.

The two have been married since 2004 and in an interview with InStyle, Mariska opened up about when they first met and she shared: ”I just about passed out when I saw him there. I thought: ‘That’s my husband.’”

Throughout the seasons of playing the lead role as detective Olivia Benson, Mariska has become a fan-favourite and the backbone of the series.

The actress has starred in other dramas including Chicago PD, Chicago Fire and ER but her role in Law and Order is what she’s best known for.

Mariska was also the recipient of a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star on Hollywood Boulevard.

The star was placed next to her mother’s Hollywood star, the late and beloved actress Jayne Mansfield.

Legendary actress, Betty Buckley who also starred in Law and Order SVU, was one of the many to comment on the Instagram photo of Mariska and Peter, sharing a number of love-heart emojis.

Ali Wentworth who made an appearance on the show in season 17 as Shari Parker, commented: “Grateful for all of you! Loved our hug today!”

In 2019, Mariska lifted the lid on the couple’s first date in an interview with People magazine: “We went to church together, and it was like getting hit with a lightning bolt.”

She added: “I just started sobbing, Peter thought I was crying because I was so moved by the service. No, it was because I was just overwhelmed, realizing he was the one.”

However, Mariska could be the one to leave fans in tears after it was rumoured she would be leaving the show.

This year, Law and Order: SVU returned with its 23rd season, which also brought back series veteran Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Maloni) who left in season 12.

From the premiere up until his departure, the two had been partners and worked closely together on investigations.

After his return, she soon made the jump to his own spin-off Law and Order: Organised Crime and now fans are convinced Olivia could leave SVU to reunite with her partner.

Law and Order: SVU returns to NBC on Thursday, December 9.
