ITV viewers ‘scared to sleep’ as Real Des shows horrific Dennis Nilsen footage

ITV viewers have been left horrified by The Real Des: The Dennis Nilsen story, after it showed chilling real-life footage of the killer from a past interview and before he was arrested.

In the clips, Nilsen spoke candidly and openly about the killings, going into detail about what he did to the poor men and why.

In other footage from before his killing sprees, the murderer could be seen reclining on a bed as he relaxed at home, which would later become the last places some of his victims ever saw.

Viewers were left disgusted, with some even complaining of feeling sick or that they were scared to sleep afterwards.

One said: "Gonna have to watch some comedy stuff after this… ain't going straight to sleep that's for sure."

Another wrote: "Woah. If I didn't feel sick before watching The Real Des tonight, I sure do now."

A third tweeted: "I feel like this needs to have a warning on it don't eat during the show because I've nearly brought it back up."

Someone else said: "I've always found this crime too grisly to watch the docs. I'm still finding it hard."

And another added: "Normally I can cope during a murder documentary but this is on another scale."

The documentary told how Nilsen found his victims, generally young men on the streets or in need and vulnerable.

It was narrated by David Tennant, who had played the sick killer in the ITV drama Des when it aired Monday to Wednesday.

The documentary makers spoke to relatives of the victims as well as officers who had worked the case at the time.

Nilsen killed at least 12 victims, however was only charged over six murders.

The identified victims were Stephen Holmes, Kenneth Ockendon, Martin Duffey, William Sutherland, Malcolm Barlow, John Howlett, Graham Allen and Stephen Sinclair.

There were also a number of other unidentified victims.
