Emmerdale star reveals Liam’s genuine concern for Meena after miscarriage lie

2021 saw Liam Cavanagh’s (Jonny McPherson) life turn upside down in Emmerdale.

Losing daughter Leanna (Mimi Slinger) aka the ‘light of his life’ in horrific circumstances, Liam spent the best part of last year in a pit of despair and overwhelming emotion.

Towards the end of 2021, Liam smiled for the first time in months when wife Leyla (Roxy Shahidi) bought him an allotment.

Tending to his fruit, veg and building a very excellent bird box, Liam uses time on the allotment to feel closer to Leanna.

Away from life on the allotment, Liam recently interrupted Meena (Paige Sandhu) at the surgery, who was in the middle of forging a fake prescription.

With Liam being the kind, caring person he is, he wanted to know what Meena was going through.

Meena told Liam she recently had a miscarriage and needed some medication as she really wasn’t coping.

Concerned for his friend, Liam gave Meena three weeks of diazepam.

Unbeknownst to the doctor, Meena is still using the pills to drug Manpreet (Rebecca Sarker) – who’s being held hostage.

As Meena continues her plan to ultimately murder her sister, she has no idea Liam has learnt there is no medical proof of her pregnancy or miscarriage.

Continuing to remain none the wiser over who Meena really is, Liam starts to worry about her, fearing his friend is going through something terrible, as Jonny McPherson recently told Metro.co.uk:

‘Once Meena talks about the fake pregnancy and Liam discovers it was a lie, he soon starts to think Meena has some serious mental health issues. He’s aware this is coming from the mind and mouth of somebody who is really struggling for whatever reason’.

Previously, village residents have had uncomfortable encounters with Meena. Priya (Fiona Wade), Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson) and Noah (Jack Downham) have all wondered if their neighbour is hiding a dark secret, but not Liam.

‘He isn’t remotely suspicious’, Jonny adds.

‘He feels nothing but doctorly duty. Also, bear in mind, Liam has no idea Meena has done anything to his daughter, she is a friend and colleague. She was a great shoulder to cry on and a confidant during the immediate aftermath of Leanna’s death, he really feels like she’s a close friend and wants to do the absolute best by her’.

During the Christmas period, Liam got drunk at the surgery party and was taken back to the B&B by Meena.

Unable to remember anything, Liam has found himself accepting Meena’s version of events (Liam was very drunk and came onto her, but nothing happened between them).

In scenes airing this week, Meena will once again turn the tables, threatening to accuse Liam of assaulting her.

Despite the confusion and shock, Liam still approaches the situation from a worried friend perspective – the thought there may be a darker side to Meena doesn’t even cross his mind.

‘Initially, Liam is terrified the truth will out and it’ll disrupt his marriage when they’ve already undergone so much strain already. From the fake prescription to the discovery of the miscarriage lie, to turning the story against him, all of that he perceives as a doctor.

‘Liam remembers absolutely nothing, he was completely bladdered. “Trousered” as Billy Connolly would say. Completely incapable of remembering anything at all.

‘Everything comes as a complete shock and that allows Meena to have leverage over him – she has memory of what really happened, and he doesn’t’.
