Emmerdale backlash as viewers label Cathy Dingle a ‘brat’

Emmerdale: Cathy gets her PMDD diagnosis

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Emmerdale.

Emmerdale’s Cathy Hope may be suffering with PMDD but viewers are not so happy with how she is handling it.

The youngster was officially diagnosed with the condition earlier this month after experiencing problems with her mental health, thought to be linked with her periods.

PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder) is similar to PMS but has far more intense symptoms including headaches, joint and muscle pain, as well as behavioural issues like binge-eating and problems with sleeping.

She has been struggling to come to terms with it and has been regularly lashing out at her loved ones, particularly her dad Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw).

After another row with her father in the latest episode, fans couldn’t help but express their dismay at the teenager’s attitude.

One viewer wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Cathy thinking she can do what she wants and people will support her…”

Another commented: “Cathy’s acting like a brat but Bob is a really really s**t dad.”

“That girl is unbearable! The most unlikeable character in any soap right now!”, a third agreed whereas a fellow user wrote: “Cathy reminds me why being 58 aint’ that bad after all.”

But the episode ended with a worrying conclusion as Cathy had made a big decision about how she wanted to proceed.

Cathy (Gabrielle Dowling) was doing research online about what she can do to combat her PMDD and found that it could be stopped entirely by removing her reproductive system.

This would require a bilateral oophorectomy, which is the removal of her ovaries, and a full hysterectomy.

But Bob was completely taken aback by this and immediately shut down any discussion around the possibility.

She then decided to go to her doctor Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) to hear his views on taking this step.

Liam confirmed that it would work but that Cathy wouldn’t be considered for the operation because of how young she is.

Nevertheless, this didn’t stop her finding a doctor in America who would be willing to perform the surgery.

In the final moments of the episode, Cathy was seen on the phone paying for the operation with her dad’s card but how will Bob react when he finds out?

Emmerdale is available to watch weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV.
