Ben Price has revealed how difficult it can be filming the heartbreaking storyline about Oliver’ battle with mitochondrial disease in Coronation Street.
The actor, who plays Nick Tilsley on the soap – the stepfather of Leanne Battersby’s (Jane Danson) son Oliver – has revealed how he copes with the emotional scenes.
Speaking on Loose Women, Ben explained: ‘I don’t know whether I deal with it very well. I get a bit upset and then you have to try and separate yourself.
‘Jane Danson has been amazing, absolutely incredible. And she carries it, she takes on that emotional journey and I just try and stay there with her.
‘But yeah, you know, these are powerful storylines and we need to tell them but sometimes you just need five minutes at the end of the day, change your clothes, remember where you are, get into another life.
‘But yeah, occasionally it’s hard.’
Coronation Street viewers will next week get to see Leanne delighted after doctors reduce Oliver’s sedation, but later have to break the news to her that life support is the only thing keeping Oliver alive.
Leanne seeks a second opinion from a hospital in Germany which treats children with mitochondrial disease, but they confirm that he will never breathe unaided and talk about her switching off his life support.
She initially downplays the severity of Oliver’s condition to the hospital in Germany to get them to agree to treat him, which would need them to raise £500,000 to cover his medical bills, however she is later convinced to give them a truthful account.
Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV and Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
