Wigan star Bevan French out for the season with injury – but will be back

BEVAN French will miss the rest of Wigan’s season after scans revealed a hamstring injury is worse than was first thought.

But he will be back next year.

The Australian full back star has returned to his homeland while he recovers from surgery after scans diagnosed the worst case scenario.

It leaves the Warriors in a quandary as Zak Hardaker in that position is set to miss up to a month because of a neck problem and Jai Field has a long-term injury.

And boss Adrian Lam revealed he is in the best place possible to come back, which he will do after taking up the option in his contract.

He said: “There are some tendon issues involved with the injury too, so he’s had that operation and while it’s not good for us, as a club we’ve got to move forward.

“He’s headed back to Australia to rehab there and spend time with his family, who need him most at this time.

“But Bevan’s taken up his option and agreed to be back for the 2022 season, which is great news. It’s great he did that before he left.

“We know he’ll go home, he’ll rehab there and be close to the family who need him most.”

French himself said: “I’m obviously upset about my injury and the duration of it, but the silver lining is that it has allowed me to re-visit home during a very difficult time for me and my family.

“I have specific goals I would like to achieve whilst at Wigan and I have yet to do those things which plays a role in my decision to take up my option.”

England star John Bateman should learn today how long he will be out for after limping out of England’s defeat to the Combined Nations All Stars.

Lam added: “It seems to be a high ankle injury but there’s always danger of that horrible word syndesmosis coming into play, that could be four to six weeks.”
