Michael Owen humiliated after predicting impossible Champions League final of Barcelona vs Liverpool

MICHAEL OWEN was left red-faced by another sporting commentary gaffe after he predicted an impossible Champions League final of Barcelona against Liverpool.

The 39-year-old has often been mocked for his bizarre remarks since hanging up his boots, including the reveal that “footballers these days often have to use their feet.”

Other gems included: “It’s definitely hit Defoe’s hand as it’s gone in, but it’s not a handball for me", and “Whichever team scores more goals usually wins."

His latest blunder involved his former club Liverpool, who he tipped to reach the Champions League final with Barcelona, despite the two facing each other in the semis.

The Reds are currently three goals down from the first leg in Europe's premier competition against the La Liga giants after a Lionel Messi masterclass.

Owen instantly realised his mistake but was left humiliated as fellow pundits Chris Sutton and Owen Hargreaves burst out laughing alongside host Robbie Savage.

The former England striker was being grilled on Saturday Morning Savage on BT Sport with a quick-fire quiz.

Messi's double after Luis Suarez's opener – which he celebrated against his former employer – means Barca already have one foot in June's final in Madrid.

The winner will go on to face the victor of the other semi-final between Ajax and Spurs, with the Dutch side favourites after a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane earlier this week.

Jurgen Klopp has refused to concede defeat in the tie but admitted that Messi was "unstoppable" and revealed he is a "big admirer" of the Argentinian.

The Anfield boss had a perfect view of the strike and even managed a smile when the goal went in, but it wasn't the best free-kick that the German has been on the end of.

Back in 2014, while still in charge of Borussia Dortmund, Klopp's team were on the end of another 3-0 walloping, this time to Hamburg.

In that game, Hakan Calhanoglu unleashed one of the best free-kicks of the last decade to put the cherry on top in injury-time.
