Bill Belichick just committed a massive New England faux pas.
The stern head coach appeared on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni & Fauria” on Tuesday and was asked why he shockingly doesn’t drink coffee.
“Because I don’t like coffee,” Belichick replied in his signature flat affect tone.
“Look, I mean I understand I am probably missing it, but I just don’t like coffee. I can’t stand the smell of coffee. I don’t like coffee ice cream and I like every sweet that has ever been made but that’s not one of them. I don’t like coffee flavored anything. I don’t know. I just don’t have the taste for it. I’ve tried, but just doesn’t work for me. My grandmother put a glass of milk and poured like probably a symbol of coffee and I couldn’t even drink that. It’s just one of those things I didn’t develop a taste for.
“Nothing against coffee. Nothing against Dunkin’ Donuts. Nothing against anything, it’s just not for me. I don’t have a taste for scotch either.”
Host Christian Fauria, who was a member of the Patriots under Belichick from 2002 to 2005, asked his former coach what he does to stay energized through the long hours of NFL coaching
“I drink orange juice,” he replied. “I can drink tea. I like tea. I’ve got a lot of other vices to make up for it so that’s one of the few I don’t have.”
Belichick, 68, isn’t native to the New England area. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee and was raised in Annapolis, Maryland. The Wesleyan graduate has an impressive 240-88 record as head coach of the Patriots, a post he assumed in 2000. His six Super Bowl rings should be enough to atone for his distaste for this northeast mainstay.
