Someone take my laptop off me because I’m only torturing myself this week by looking up hair inspiration for a new look I can’t actually get.

Though Boris promises hair salons and non-essential shops will be allowed to open again from December 2, that’s still a good few weeks away – and a good few weeks of me staring despairingly at my overgrown roots and split ends.

Not making the situation any better is Michelle Keegan, who was clever enough to snag a last minute hair appointment before the lockdown came into effect. And the colour she opted for is one I think we’ll all be asking for when salons re-open.

  • Love Island’s Laura Anderson looks completely different with new shoulder-length brunette hair

Her go-to colourist, Calum Tierney, posted an envy-inducing video of Michelle showing off her newly coloured hair. And though her brunette lengths are as rich and chocolatey in colour as ever, she does have some noticeable new face framing highlights around her face.

Calum tells us in his caption that this way of framing the face with lighter strands is called “colour contouring” – and it’s more clever than it first looks.

Inspired by the process of contouring the face with make-up, hair contouring “uses a combination of free hand application and highlighting, paired with the careful positioning of different tones and depths around the face to highlight and shadow targeted areas,” say the experts at L’Oreal Professional.

Darker tones are used to create shadows, and can help shorten or narrow the face shape. Lighter tones are used to elongate and lengthen the face shape by helping to reflect light.

While colour contouring has been modernised and popularised as of late, the process isn’t actually brand new. And Michelle is by no means the first celeb to hop on the hair make-up train, as other famous fans of the technique include Kim Kardashian, Lily Aldridge and Jessica Biel.

With the possibility of future lockdowns on the cards post-Christmas, hair salons have seen a big shift in customer demand away from usually-popular colour services like full-head highlights. Clients instead are opting for more low maintenance ‘dos that will see their colour grow out naturally, and not into an obvious root line.

As colour contouring works to enhance the natural colour you have, it’s actually the perfect service to ask for this December.

I’ll be heading to a Hari’s salon as soon as the doors open to try one of their colour contouring-inspired “lockdown lasting colours”, but if you don’t have one local to you, just ask your colourist to give this technique a go on you next time you pay them a visit.

You can thank me and Michelle later – most likely during the next lockdown when your roots aren’t screaming out for attention by week two.
