Business Insider reports that “Bezos delivered that message at Amazon’s Re: Mars conference on Thursday in Las Vegas after he was asked what advice he would give to anyone looking to start their own business.”
Passion Is Everything
“If you can figure out what you love to do, your day will be so fun. You will work with like minded energized people and your work will be so fun.”
He advises everyone starting a business or pursuing their dreams through their careers to follow their hearts and do something the enjoy. It goes without saying that we all spend so much time at work, and when someone can truly and thoroughly enjoy what they do, the days are filled with fun accomplishments rather than the feeling of a grinding work day. Find Your Calling
“You can have a job, or you can have a career, or you can have a calling… and if you can somehow figure out how to have a calling, you have hit the jackpot, cause that’s the big deal.”
There are some people that go to work and punch a clock for a paycheck. There are others that build a career for themselves through dedication and hard work. Then, there are people that have truly tapped in to their calling, and those are the people that Jeff Bezos inspires us all to be. He reiterates that when someone follows their passion to the degree that they are following their calling, and tapping in to a deeper level of ingrained, authentic inner motivation, the end results are limitless, as is the potential for exceptional success.
Embrace Your Failures
“We take risks all the time, we talk about failure. We need big failures in order to move the needle. If we don’t, we’re not swinging enough. You really should be swinging hard, and you will fail, but that’s okay.”
Everyone tries to avoid failing, and nobody sets out to fail, but Bezos pushes this topic much further and insists that failure is absolutely necessary. It’s a natural part of any risk-taking process and Bezos believes that without engaging in big risk-taking moves, there will never be a major pay-out. Failure is something that Bezos encourages everyone to embrace and learn from, rather than fearing failure and not taking the necessary risks as a way of avoiding it.
The Customer Is Not Always Right
“No customer was asking for Echo…Market research doesn’t help. If you had gone to a customer in 2013 and said, ‘Would you like a black, always-on cylinder in your kitchen about the size of a Pringles can that you can talk to and ask questions, that also turns on your lights and plays music?’ I guarantee you they’d have looked at you strangely and said, ‘No, thank you.’”
Many business minded individuals foster the philosophy that the customer is always right. They are perhaps too eager to please and less confident in themselves than they could and should be. Bezos believes that the customer doesn’t have the foresight or broader understanding that is required to be credited with “always being right.” He encourages business owners to think outside of the box, cultivate their own ideas, and be willing to go against the grain with the true essence of wanting to bring new, innovative things to their customers.
Focus On The Consistent, Known Factors
Ask yourself ‘What is not going to change?’ What customer needs will be stable over the next 10 years and focus your energy there.’
Interestingly, Bezos has honed in on one of the most common mistakes that people make in the world of business, and it just so happens to be something that is commonly emphasized as being something to strive for.
Bezos indicates that while many people put focus on what is going to change in 10 years, 20 years, or more, that has proven to be a backwards process. He thinks the opposite. Rather than anticipating change, he suggests that the smartest business minds would instead focus on what is consistent and what’s not going to change. He encourages entrepreneurs to focus intently on what is going to be consistently required and needed, and put their energy there.
