Her youngest daughter Princess Eugenie, 30, and husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed their first child, a baby boy, at the Portland Hospital in central London yesterday morning.

The Duke and Duchess of York are already grandparents to Princess Beatrice’s stepson, Wolfie, but the baby boy is their first biological grandson.

Now, like many grandparents whose families have expanded during the pandemic, Fergie faces an agonising wait to meet the new arrival.

Both Eugenie and Jack enjoy a close relationship with the Duchess – even staying with her in Windsor over last year’s lockdown – and they will almost certainly want her to play an important role in their son’s life.

And with her love of costumes and flair for theatrics, she certainly has plenty of qualities that make her a perfect fit for the role of ‘fun Granny’.

Not only did the Duchess of York, 61, raise daughters Beatrice, 32, and Eugenie, 30, but she has spent more than 30 years writing children’s books to delight young families.

The mother-of-two typically doesn’t hold back when it comes to marking major milestones.

Celebrating the news that Princess Eugenie was pregnant, she gushed: ‘Verified I am so excited by the news that Eugenie and Jack are expecting their first child.

‘Thrilled for them both and in my 60th year cannot wait to be a grandmother. Welcoming a new baby into the York family is going to be a moment of profound joy.’
