Coronavirus cases in England have forced the Government to implement a second countrywide lockdown. The latest plans to bring the disease under control take after those the country endured in March and warrant countrywide closures of non-essential services. As such, people will have to wait until December 2 before they get to indulge in another dose of retail therapy.
Is Matalan closing?
The latest lockdown draws a fine line between essential and non-essential services, only the former of which may stay open.
Much like in March, most retail stores fall must now abide by the Government’s guidelines and shut their doors.
Ministers have included clothing shops such as Matalan among them.
All stores in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland remained open until yesterday, but they now have to hunker down with the rest of the UK.
Steve Johnson, Executive Chairman cox the chain, posted a COVID-19 update ahead of the countrywide lockdown.
He said Matalan would weather the new lockdown until it expires in December, after which they will continue to provide COVID safe services.
He wrote: “Following the latest Government guidance, we will sadly be temporarily closing all of our stores in England.”
“Our stores in England will close at 8pm on Wednesday November 4 for four weeks.
“We hope to reopen in early December, but we will of course follow all the latest advice and guidance from the Government.
“As ever, we will continue to be there for you and your family and we really appreciate your ongoing support. In the meantime we do hope you’ll continue to shop with us online and via our app or our Click and Collect service at your nearest store.
“Looking further ahead please be assured that safety will continue to be our number one priority this year, for both our customers and our colleagues.”

People can find the full Matalan clothing range both online or via the app if they want to shop there during the lockdown.
Shoppers should have the chance to return to stores in time for Christmas, but there is no guarantee of this yet.
The Prime Minister promised the current restrictions would expire on December 2.
But the Government’s decisions depend on the countrywide situation.
When quizzed in the House of Commons, Mr Johnson seemed determined to have the country return to as it was before.
He added MPs would decide what to do beyond December 2.
The Prime Minister said: “The R is above one but it is not much above one and if we work hard between now and December 2, I believe that we can get it below one.
“But whatever happens, these restrictions end on December 2 and any further measures will be a matter for the House of Commons.”
