Footage shows why parents should never leave something in the cot with a baby

While it might seem like you are comforting your baby with a blanket while they sleep, this video shows why it can be really dangerous.

TikTok account @Safesleepabc posted the video – which it says was taken from a real baby monitor – showing a baby sleeping with a comfort blanket, accidentally pulling it over its face.

Luckily, the parents realised before it became serious but could be a problem if they hadn’t been keeping a close eye on the monitor, for example, during the night.

The account shares educational videos for parents to keep kids safe while they sleep.

It advises they follow the ABC principle – which stands for alone, back and crib.

The idea focuses on putting babies to sleep alone with no loose blankets or toys, placing them on their backs, and ensuring they are sleeping in a secure crib.

The caption on the video adds: ‘Do not have ANYTHING in your baby’s sleep space. Thankfully this baby’s parents got there in time.’

The video has had over two million views and some commenters said it had really shown them why it’s important to check how your little one is sleeping.

One said: ‘The way baby panics just breaks my heart.’

Another added: ‘Lesson learned.’

NHS guidelines to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome advise putting your baby ‘feet to foot’ meaning their feet are at the bottom of their cot or moses basket, tucking bedding in at the side and ensuring that it only comes up to their chest.

The guidelines also say babies should be placed on their back to sleep, in a cot in the same room as you, for the first six months.
