Makeup artist Pauline Briscoe has worked in the makeup industry for over 20 years, working for the likes of Vogue, Glamour, The Sunday Times Style magazine, ES magazine, and Fabulous magazine. She shares her makeup expertise on her Instagram account @paulinebriscoe and is a member of SmileDirectClub’s Confidence Council, which aims to boost the nation’s confidence levels.

She exclusively told Express.co.uk what eye makeup she recommends for older women. Choosing the wrong shades can exacerbate wrinkles and make you look tired.

“Neutrals are a girl’s best friend no matter the age,” the makeup artist told Express.co.uk. Neutral colours are the likes of black, white, brown and grey. They are natural-looking colors that will help to define the eye.

Pauline has a particular favourite palette. She said: “My recommended palettes would include NYX Swear by It palette (and I do swear by it!).”

The brand claims the 40-colour palette is inspired by the autumn, and is full of warm colours including chocolate brown and oranges. It comes with both shimmery and matte shades.

Pauline also recommended another palette from the popular brand Urban Decay. The popular Born to Run palette, £53, comes with 21 shades. The brand claims: “If you’re looking to invest in your next can’t-live-without eyeshadow palette, stop the search! Urban Decay’s Born To Run Eyeshadow Palette has everything, and we mean everything, you need to create neutral and bright looks.”

Pauline added: “Urban Decay Born to Run is a staple palette for everyone with great browns/neutrals and Makeup by Mario is also brilliant for a neutral palette.”

The Master Mattes Eyeshadow Palette, £52, from Makeup by Mario, includes: “Mario’s ride-or-die mattes, uniquely shaded and inspired by human skin tones from light to deep.”

Pauline added: “Warm and soft pastel shades are complementary on older skin as these shades create the illusion of a youthful and fresh appearance.”

She also recently detailed three things every woman over 50 needs in her makeup bag.  Pauline advised a hybrid moisturiser/foundation, a tinted lip balm and a lip gloss. She recommended the best foundation for older skin for a “flawless natural finish” too.

She suggested two more expensive options and one more budget product.

Pauline told Express.co.uk readers: “Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua is an ultra-light skin perfecting foundation & Chanel Ultra Le Teint is amazing for hydrating the skin and gives a flawless coverage.”

Another option Pauline recommends for more mature skin is the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer, £24.
