Netflix’s Sex Education is returning for a third season, and it’s safe to say we’re very excited. Here’s everything we know so far. Warning: this article contains spoilers for Sex Education season two.
With filming for season three of Sex Education now well underway, we’ve got our first hint of what to expect when the show finally returns to our screens.
Speaking in a new interview with The Guardian, Asa Butterfield – who plays Otis Milburn in the series – revealed that his character has undergone some changes between seasons two and three.
“There’s a bit of a time-jump since the season two cliff-hanger,” he explained. “Otis is back at school but he’s got different things on his plate. He’s grown up a bit and become slightly more sassy.”

He added: “It’s been fun to portray his newfound charisma. Don’t worry, though, he’s still tragically awkward too.”
Butterfield also revealed his character would sport a moustache after the time-jump but was quick to add that it “doesn’t last the whole season”.
“I don’t think anyone could bear looking at that thing for long,” he joked.
Although we don’t yet know when Netflix’s Sex Education will return, we do know some details about the new season, which was first announced in February last year and began production in September after delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Here’s everything we know about Sex Education season three so far.
Who is in the cast for Sex Education season three?
Alongside Asa Butterfield, we know all of the series’ main characters will be returning for season three thanks to Netflix’s announcement video.
These, of course, include Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey and Aimee Lou Wood.
On top of the main cast, however, there will also be some new cast members joining the season three line-up.
These include Girls star Jemima Kirke (who will be playing Moordale’s new headmistress Hope), alongside Dua Saleh as a new student called Cal and Jason Isaacs as Peter Groff, Mr Groff’s more successful older brother.
What will Sex Education season three be about?
If the other seasons are anything to go by, it’s probably easier to ask “what won’t they be about?”
The show’s creator Laurie Nunn is great at exploring a range of important storylines and situations all at once, so we have no doubt that the plot for season three will be just as good as the other two.
Of course, the big storyline which will continue to lie at the center of the show in season three will be Otis and Maeve’s relationship. After Otis and Ola called it a day and he sent a voice message to Maeve confessing his love for her, we were sure the two would finally get together.
But Isaac, Maeve’s neighbour who happens to have a crush on her, got in the middle of that happily-ever-after moment when he deleted Otis’ message, leaving Maeve none the wiser.
When will Sex Education season three be released?
The last two seasons have premiered in January, but because production on the show was delayed by four months because of the pandemic, chances are it’ll be Spring before we see Sex Education return to our screens.
