Vogue Williams champions this season's must-have headwear trend at Punchestown

Racing season is officially in full swing and with that comes a whole new plethora of style inspiration.

Vogue Williams is already a seasoned pro at the racing calendar just five months into the year and championed one of this season’s most sought after occasionwear hair accessories – the hatband. Kate Middleton is credited with its comeback after adopting the style at major appearances over the last year, albeit in more formal royal-appropriate styles, but her impact has trickled down to the high street where royal fashion watchers can emulate the look for a lot less.

At Punchestown Racecourse yesterday, Vogue paid homage to Irish heritage as well as her adopted home in the UK, wearing a sleek black hatband by Dublin native Martha Lynn, who lives in London, with an olive green midi dress by Amanda Wakeley. The trend is so influential that Natasha Archer, Kate’s personal stylist and confidante, wore a blush pink version for her investiture ceremony on Thursday when she was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order in recognition of her service to the British royal family.

Martha Lynn, who designed ‘The Top Knot’, told Style that she has been working with this particular style since 2015 when she created one out of necessity for herself.

“Being a milliner, I am obviously very into hats and I made this piece originally in pink for myself because I was going on holidays and I have lovely curly Irish hair so I turn into Monica from Friends when I’m in the heat,” she said. “It was a great piece when you tie up your hair and want to look half decent without blowdrying your hair!

“I have this in about 10 different colours and I’ve added them to a few collections since then. They’ve really taken off in last the year – Kate has been wearing these halo-style pieces over the last year and I think they’re really nice for somebody who isn’t a hat person but still wants to wear something that feels special. I describe it as an entry level piece.”

Headwear is synonymous with the races, but the expected attire is undergoing a more contemporary makeover where hats and fascinators sit alongside headbands as the accessories du jour. But, like anything, it takes confidence to pull off and Vogue has self-assuredness in her fashion choices in spades

“What I love about Vogue is she always does her own thing,” Martha added. “She does what suits her and I would encourage more people to do that. Just because you’re going to the races doesn’t mean you need to wear a hat and it doesn’t need to be expensive either. You can buy something or even try making it yourself.”

Vogue has spent time at home in Ireland over the last week and has been busying her calendar with activities and last week, she took to the decks at Brown Thomas Dublin for the launch of their new swimwear collections.
