Sharon Osbourne, the wife of Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne, has revealed that Ozzy and guitarist Tony Iommi have the full ownership of the band’s name.
During a recent episode of Steve-O‘s “Wild Ride” podcast, the TV personality asked Sharon, “I’ve gotta guess, you being the shrewd business mind behind the Ozzy empire … when Black Sabbath gets reunited with Ozzy, now it’s going to be on your terms. And, essentially, all the other people in Black Sabbath are going to be employees of the band. Is that about right?”
“It’s about right,” Sharon responded. “But Ozzy and Tony own the name. Geezer and Bill don’t. So it’s Ozzy and Tony … and they are partners in Black Sabbath. So, you’re kind of right: Ozzy and Tony are equal. And, at the time, the other guys — it’s kind of like pay-for-play.”
Black Sabbath members include Ozzy, Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward.
In 2009, Ozzy filed a lawsuit against Iommi alleging that the guitarist illegally took sole ownership of the band’s name in a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Osbourne sought 50 percent interest in the “Black Sabbath” trademark, along with a portion of Iommi’s profits from use of the name.
