Rachel Riley, 33, was mocked by Jimmy Carr, 46, as she faced a puzzling challenge on 5 Gold Rings. The Countdown host, who is known for her expertise in mathematics, attempted to use a numerical method to explain her placement of the golden ring on the ITV game show. After the pregnant presenter was spotted making a last minute movement to the ring before time ran out, host Phillip Schofield, 57, exclaimed: “Oh, the last minute kick! You decided not to step that out.” Opening up about her thought process, Rachel replied: “Well no, I don’t think I had time.
“But with maths, if it’s 11 and then 10 you wouldn’t get all the way back to the X so it has to be lower than the X.”
Seizing the opportunity to tease Rachel on her maths skills, Jimmy, who was on the opposing team, fired back: “What do you know about maths?”
The comedian’s cheeky retort prompted laughter from both the studio audience and Rachel.
However, in spite of the blonde beauty’s best efforts, she was unable to steal the money from her opponents.
Acknowledging her mishap in the game, Rachel admitted: “My logic was completely rubbish.”
Elsewhere, Rachel took to Twitter to hit back at a criticism of vegan diets.
The Countdown favourite has been vegan for two years now after starting off with cutting out dairy products.
As a result, one of Rachel’s fans brought an article from a BMJ journal to her attention, in which nutritionist Emma Derbyshire warned those who eat vegan or plant-based diet aren’t getting a key brain nutrient.
The article was shared by a Twitter user on the micro-blogging site, who added the caption: “Trendy vegan diets could LOWER IQ due to lack of a nutrient that is critical to brain health, leading nutritionists warn. This would explain a few things.”
Rachel’s fan then tweeted the post to the Countdown star, writing: “Erm @RachelRileyRR.”
However, Rachel appeared to challenge the claim as she stated the nutrient is included in her pre-natal vitamins.
“Choline’s in my prenatal vitamins, all fine then,” she replied, alongside a pregnant person emoji.
Dr Derbyshire wrote in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health: “Given the important physiological roles of choline and authorisation of certain health claims, it is questionable why choline has been overlooked for so long in the UK.
“Choline is presently excluded from UK food composition databases, major dietary surveys, and dietary guidelines.”
She also insisted the importance of choline must not be “overlooked” by healthcare professionals, especially during pregnancy as it is vital for infant development.
Rachel is expecting her first baby with her husband Pasha Kovalev, 39.
The TV personality announced she was pregnant back in May and tied the knot with the former Strictly Come Dancing professional in a secret Vegas ceremony shortly after.
5 Gold Rings continues Saturday on ITV from 7pm.
