Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, is said to have struck up a friendship that hinted at romance with The X Factor winner Matt Cardle, months before she met Prince Harry.
Meghan is now married to the sixth-in-line to the throne but sources close to Matt, who won The X Factor in 2010, say that she slid into his DMs in 2015 after he first followed her on Instagram.
Meghan, who was then appearing in TV drama Suits, followed him back and is said to have messaged him and said ‘she was a big fan of his work’.
‘Matt couldn’t believe a Hollywood star like Meghan would even know who he was so he was very flattered and they chatted a little bit online before she suggested meeting up,’ a source close to Matt claimed, alleging that Meghan was in London at the time.
But Matt then met his girlfriend Amber Hernaman and ‘ghosted’ Meghan.
‘It felt like there could have been a connection but the timing was wrong. He didn’t reply to her last message,’ the insider told The Sun.
Matt isn’t the only British celeb Meghan had been messaging though, as in 2013 Meghan revealed to a British journalist that she was beig pursued by Ashley Cole, and had considered taking him up on his offer of a date.
While in the UK six years ago, as she began to raise her profile in the country as an actress in legal drama Suits, she told a pal over drinks that the then-Chelsea footballer was following her on Twitter and kept ‘trying to talk’ to her. ‘He’s trying really hard,’ she added.
The story was published in the Daily Mail by journalist Katie Hind, who met with Meghan in 2013 at the Sanctum Soho Hotel for a night of champagne and chatting.
She revealed that during the evening, Meghan asked her for her advice on Ashley, admitting that he had asked her to ‘go out on a date while I’m over here in London’ but that she was unsure.
In 2013 Cole was three years divorced from pop star Cheryl Tweedy; the pair had split after years of rumours of adultery.
Katie went on to tell Meghan about his indiscretions, and Meghan replied: ‘Thanks, I appreciate it. Some of my friends told me to stay away from him, too. I think I’ll leave it.’
