Kate Garraway has revealed she's been suffering "abuse" for putting on a happy face while on Good Morning Britain.

The 53 year old explained to her co-host Adil Ray that people have been judging her for "laughing and joking" on the show while her husband Derek Draper remains in intensive care after beating the coronavirus.

The mum-of-two, who recently said her husband is "stable" as she gave an update on his condition, said: "We've talked about this, with me doing this show, if we're having a laugh and joke – because that's our job in the morning to cheer everybody up – people then say does that mean you're not worried about Derek or you're not feeling sad about it.

"Not really understanding we're all human and the most important thing is we have to laugh and smile."

Kate, who came back to present the ITV programme twice a week four months after Derek fell ill, added: "Nothing warrants abuse, in my opinion."

Earlier in the show, the presenter shared her heartbreak over being unable to see her husband on his birthday.

Speaking to Adil, Kate revealed she and her two children Darcey, 14, and Bill, 11, were forced to celebrate her beloved husband’s birthday apart over the weekend.

Kate explained that Derek turned 53 on Saturday 15 August and said: “It was Derek’s birthday on Saturday, which is obviously a challenging one under the circumstances.
