Freddie Starr's estranged wife 'devastated' over comedian's death

Freddie Starr’s estranged wife Sophie Lea has been left ‘devastated’ over the comedian’s tragic death at the age of 76.

The pair wed in 2013 but later split, and Sophie claimed that Freddie refused her requests for a divorce.

Now however the 37-year-old has opened up on her time with Freddie, and revealed that ‘although we broke up a long time ago I was devastated to hear the news of Freddie’s death’.

‘We hadn’t spoken for a long time despite still being legally married after he moved to Spain. Although we had our differences that’s all water under the bridge now,’ she said.

The comedian died in his home in Spain on 9 May aged 76.

His manager confirmed the sad news in a post thought to be his official Facebook page.

‘This is Freddie’s manager. Just to confirm Freddie has passed away. RIP to our greatest comedian of all time,’ it read.

It has been claimed his body was discovered by a carer on the floor of his flat in Costa Del Sol; his cause of death was later confirmed to be a heart attack.

In 2016, Sophie claimed Freddie had abused her, writing in a blog:  ‘After the Yewtree investigation had finished I honestly believed things would get better, call me foolish but when you’re in an abusive relationship hope is all you have.

Speaking to the Mail Online on Friday however, she added: ‘I’d like to be left alone now to just remember him for the fantastic comedian he was and the pleasure he brought to his millions of fans.’

Tributes for the comic poured in on social media.

Lord Alan Sugar commented: ‘According to some news reports Freddie Star has died in Spain. If true sad news, he was a very funny man RIP.’

And pal Bobby Davro tweeted: ‘I’ve just heard that Freddie Starr has died. He was the funniest man I have ever seen.

‘I’m so sad we have lost one of our greatest comedy talents. RIP Freddie.’

However Freddie was among those arrested by police who were investigation allegations of historic sex abuse; between 2012-2014 he was questioned four times by officers, before being released without charge.

Close pal Jim Davidson has since suggested that the late star never got over the accusations – and allegedly threatened to end his life.

The 65-year-old said: ‘He told [police] he was going to kill himself…I asked him what they did when he said that and he said, “they kept me in a cell for 14 hours while I had a psychiatric assessment”.’

‘I think it really broke him. He was overwhelmed by it all.’
