Brooke Shields says she could’ve been on “The View” — if it hadn’t been for Jenny McCarthy.
During an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live” Thursday night, Shields confirmed that she was seriously in the running for the co-host spot left vacant by Elisabeth Hasselbeck in 2013.
“I went through a week of being on the show and, you know, I did all my homework, I take everything very seriously,” the actress said. “And then they called me one day … I get a call from the producer and he says, ‘Well, we’ve decided to go with Jenny McCarthy.”
Quickly calling the former Playboy model a “friend,” Shields then quipped with a laugh and a few pointed looks, “You want one or the other — I think they were going for something different.”
Perhaps Shields, 54, dodged a bullet with the snub. McCarthy, 46, has been vocal about despising her short stint on the ABC talk show — especially alongside co-creator and media legend Barbara Walters.
“Every day I went home and I was miserable,” McCarthy said in Ramin Setoodeh’s 2019 book “Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of ‘The View,’” (via Vulture). “It really was the most miserable I’ve been on a job in my 25 years of show business.”
She said she wasn’t able to be herself on the air, adding: “I was going to work crying. I couldn’t be myself. My fans were telling me, ‘Where’s Jenny? They aren’t letting you be you.’”
McCarthy has been hosting her own SiriusXM show for the last several years.
